My Name Is Joe

via The Hungry Chronicles

My Name Is Joe airstream trailer opened in Austin back in February, much to the delight of downtowners that had grown accustomed to other coffee houses such as Caffe Medici, Houndstooth, and Starbucks.  I know I was ready for something a little different, and was excited for My Name Is Joe because award-winning chef and restaurateur Philip Speer was one of the parties involved, along with William Ball, owner of downtown’s Garage Cocktail Bar.

My Name Is Joe | The Hungry Chronicles

My Name Is Joe | The Hungry Chronicles

Aside from serving perfectly tasty cups of coffee and delicious food like tartines (open faced sandwiches) and breakfast bowls, My Name Is Joe is on a mission to support the greater good of coffee and community, one cup at a time, while also contributing a portion of profits to one Central Texas nonprofit treatment center.

It’s no secret that both Ball and Speer struggled at one point with alcohol and drug dependency, and now in recovery they both wanted to give back to others who are battling the same demons and wanted to give them an opportunity and a “workplace for people in recovery where sobriety and a love for food and coffee cannot only coexist, but thrive,” says Ball.

1.2% of sales from My Name Is Joe support the Comfort Café, a 100 percent donation-based restaurant located in Smithville, Texas. The café wholly funds and employs residents at Serenity Star Recovery, the nonprofit addiction-treatment center that operates the café.

My Name Is Joe | The Hungry Chronicles

William Ball and Philip Speer are focused on delivering to the citizens of Austin a distinctive and exceptional coffee and food experience, and at the moment they are offering breakfast and lunch dishes in addition to innovative drinks like the turmeric latte and matcha latte, as well as more traditional caffeinated drinks like espresso, lattes, cappuccinos, house-made cold brew and nitro cold brew, and good ol’ drip coffee. My Name Is Joe features beans from lauded 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters out of Vancouver, and makes their almond milk and horchata in house.

My Name Is Joe | The Hungry Chronicles

As far as the food goes, Speer wanted to avoid your stereotypical coffee shop fare like stale bagels and basic muffins and focused on what he refers to as “stick-to-the-ribs” fare. Some of my favorites are their tartines, or open-faced sandwiches, and my go tos are the Moroccan tartine with house hazelnut hummus, pickled beets, cucumber, ras el hanout and fresh herbs, as well as the avocado tartine made with escabeche carrots, sorrel, green onions, and black radish.

My Name Is Joe | The Hungry Chronicles

Other highlights include brown rice porridge served with a soft poached egg, scallions, house-made kimchee and bulgogi tofu; Texas Rancher Oats, gluten-free steel-cut oats served with a savory tomato sauce, a poached egg, queso fresco, black beans and avocado; and Avocado T’oats, a dish of gluten-free steel-cut oats, heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil and preserved Meyer lemon for the savory options, and almond-butter toast with apple jam and miso butterscotch and house-made granola with cultured yogurt for some sweeter options.

My Name Is Joe Coffee Co. is located in a vintage Airstream Trailer at 501 Colorado St. in downtown Austin and is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you’ve got a hankering for some great coffee and fantastic food and want to support a business that gives back, definitely give My Name Is Joe a try. If you’re looking for other coffee options in Austin, check out this post I wrote on my favorite coffee shops and cafes to work and get inspired.

The Best New Restaurants in Austin

via Do512

There are so many new, delicious places you should know about in Austin.

Speaking of which, let’s go ahead and welcome the newest rising stars of the Austin restaurant scene. Discover some of the best new restaurants and food trucks that recently opened around town on this page, below.

Tumble 22 Hot Chicken

1120 West 5th Street

That spicy, flightless bird known as hot chicken has finally landed in Austin, and not a moment too soon. Austin has long had a bountiful selection of diverse and delicious foods from the wide world over, so it’s frankly surprising that it’s taken hot chicken this long to arrive here in town. For the uninitiated, hot chicken is an irrefutably classic dish that originated in Nashville, TN. It is a meal which is juicy, fried, spicy as hell, and can now be found in Austin at Tumble 22 Hot Chicken food truck.

Il Brutto

1617 E 6th St

Coming soon to The Arnold near you, Il Brutto combines two formerly known Austin-Italian delicacies, Gatto Nero and Enoteca Gattino, into one. The neighborhood Italian restaurant will begin serving this summer, featuring two Neapolitan wood-burning brick ovens, a private dining room, a wine cellar and a shaded patio. From the ingredients atop your house pizza to the wood it’s baked on, Il Brutto locally outsources most things (edible and non-edible) in the kitchen. On the run? Il Brutto’s sister shop, Counterpart, located at the back end of The Arnold, wraps up the savory Italian cuisine into sandwich-form for a quick deluxe.

Skull & Cakebones

3991 E HWY 290, Dripping Springs, TX, 78620

Austin’s known for craft brews, cocktails and… bakeries? Yep, that’s right, Skull & Cakebones is Austin’s newest sweet spot to reinvent the vegan baked good. All ingredients are plant-based and locally produced to create unique tastes you won’t believe to be vegan. Indulge in all things from staple cakes, cookies, and scones to breakfast pockets, sandwiches, soups and salads. If you’re really in the mood to treat yo’ self, try one of their many delectable trifles such as the Peached Horchata or TurboMisu. Select products are available at various Austin establishments, see a full list of Skull & Cakebones retailers here#THISBATCHISLOCAL

Fumaca Gaucha Brazilian Steakhouse

5100 E 7th St

If you face trouble selecting just one main entree, this Brazilian Steakhouse makes it easy on you with an all for one, one for all variety of 15 different cuts of meats including chicken, beef, pork, lamb, and sausage. Fumaca Gaucha’s professional gauchos do indeed bring the heat, individually serving each guest by slicing meats off skewers and onto the plate. This two-course meal is complete with greens from the salad bar, featuring over 30 veggies and cheeses to accompany your marathon of meats.

Native Hostel

807 East 4th St.

Native Hostel Austin is the only self-described boutique hostel in Austin. That little qualifier, boutique, makes a big difference on the look, feel, and vibe that they’re going for. That being said, playing golf by yourself doesn’t make a hole in one any less impressive. Food & drink are important concepts at Native. Appropriately enough, they’ve devised a 7am-2am kitchen (soon to be 24-hour) and full-service bar for the hostel. The menu consists of well-loved, unfussy classics like fried chicken sandwiches, cheeseburgers, and salads, as well as vegetarian options like the tempeh wrap. The bar serves a variety of cocktails, local beers, and if you’re inclined, Champagne and Prosecco. The next room over contains both a cafe open for breakfast and an expansive living room area for patrons to hang out in.

Vigilante

7010 Easy Wind Dr

Veracruz All Natural

Brought to you by two taco-driven sisters from Veracruz, Mexico, Veracruz All Natural is the spot for quick, healthy and flavorsome tacos. Since originating in a tiny trailer on E Cesar Chavez over 10 years ago, the family-run business now has three thriving locations and has received respectable attention for their remarkable migas taco from The Food Network’s “Best Five Tacos in America,” as well as recognition from The Discovery Channel’s “Delicious Destinations.”

Mattie’s at Green Pastures

The grass is always greener… but how could one argue the delightfully exquisite cocktails, soul-inspired entrees, and heavy Texas hospitality found deep in the heart of Mattie’s. Mattie’s is a unique and elegant dining experience infused with American rustic character. The live-oak-shaded porch and grand dining room bring a home-style feel to its intimate setting whether for dinner for two or private parties with your “fancier” friends.

Stonehouse Coffee & Bar

1105 S Lamar Blvd

What was once the 1900 Dawson Stone House, Stonehouse Coffee & Bar brings a historic sense to the familiar tastes of Austin. The lucid divinity and simplicity of the building do not resemble the menu, as the cafe offers Austin’s own Cuvée CoffeeBurro Cheese Kitchen, Quack’s 43rd Street Bakery and select flavors from the Austin Gelato Company. Inside, find decor to embody middle-class homes in the early 1970’s when the site was officially labeled a Texas Historical Landmark. So whether it’s for a taste or to glance at its evident beauty, stop by this neighborhood spot for coffee, wine, craft beers on tap and favorite foods of Austin.

Velvet Taco

11501 Rock Rose Ave

Welp, it takes balls to pride yourself as “temple to the liberated taco” here in Austin. We take our tacos seriously, and that’s why Velvet Taco was a must for this up and coming list. In straying from a Tex-Mex only menu, this unique corner offers strange (but always fresh) ingredients to spice up your taco taste buds, seriously. International flavors are made from scratch in a funky environment to elevate all expectations of the typical taco joint, and unlike others, no taco is left a secret.

Christmas Eve Feels

You know that feeling that you get – the same feeling that you’d get on Christmas Eve as a child – where you know something really great is just around the corner?  It might be that your best friend is visiting for the weekend and you’re about to scoop her at the airport… or you’re running your first marathon in the morning and can’t seem to fall asleep from the anticipation… or it’s the first Friday of ACL and you can just feel the energy in the air.

It’s exactly that. It’s an energy inside, like the feeling of butterflies in your stomach.  And the absolute best thing is when it shows up completely unexpected.  I got this feeling a few Saturdays ago over at Emo’s when one of my closest lady friends took me to a show. I only knew that she was super excited to see this band, so I of course was just happy knowing that she was excited.  Not expecting too much, but also knowing her great taste in music, I happily got ready for a Saturday night that I knew would be different from just “going out” downtown.

When you know someone really well, their actions can speak louder than words at times right? We arrive, home girl orders a double, and that’s my cue – it is on.  Something really good is about to happen.  No Christmas Eve Feels quite yet… maybe more like that feeling when you’re about to be surprised, and your gut is telling you that something’s up.

It took one song… not even a full song!  Best guess is that it happened during the bridge.  But they got me.  I’m in love with live music in general, but getting Christmas Eve Feels from a band so quickly doesn’t happen often enough.  And seeing as though tomorrow (!!!) is the day that the lineup is scheduled to be announced for ACL 2017, I thought that the timing was pretty spot on – so I’m calling it.  If these guys aren’t at ACL this year I’ll really wonder what the world is coming to.  This is that band that you see on the Friday of ACL that jump starts the entire weekend – the one around 4pm when you’re cracking open your first IPA… or perhaps wondering why the yummy-smelling-hippie-who-let-you-rub-her-essential-oils-on-your-body-and-now-you’re-best-friends just sold you an entire water bottle of wine that clearly must be gone in an hour or else it’ll be too warm to drink… or when you’re trying to maneuver the flask of vodka from your inappropriately short cut offs without the adorable pink-haired 4 year old seeing any of your bits.  The band that everyone meets at when you’ve all shut down and disconnected from the work week and it’s officially ACL – the one that launches your 3-Day Weekend of Adult Christmas.

This is that “4pm Friday of ACL” band; I’d put money on it.  I can’t tell you why, other than the obvious talent that is not made so obvious from my iPhone-that-thinks-its-a-flip-phone video… but my Christmas Eve Feels have never been wrong.

Oh, and their name is The Revivalists.  Check them out!!! And if you like what you hear let me know! Simply because it’ll make me happy that maybe someone else also got to experience Christmas Eve Feels, too. 🙃

Austin Pets Alive! Pet of the Week: George

Looking for a new cat to take home? Meet George!

George

George is the perfect cat! He loves to play, explore, and get tons of affection from people. He’ll flop over in your arms to be held like a baby, and he adores snuggling in your lap. He’s so intriguingly handsome too, from the top of his black and white, fur toupee to the end of his fluffy, soft tail.

George is very outgoing and so playful; he has an amusing way of hitting toys long distances and then chasing after them. His scratching behavior is refined and proper, and, though he can be a little fidgety with nail trimming, he’s cooperative about his kitty mani-pedis overall. George loves other cats and given his high level of activity and affection, he would also do well with children and cat-friendly dogs.

George would be an engaging addition to most any home. Surround him with attentive and loving people and he’ll be one happy cat. George is the whole kitty package…meet this super guy today!
